The Berlitz School and the Paint Factory The former Habsburg port of Trieste in the north-east of Italy is closer to Vienna than
Rome. Its cosmopolitan and culturally ambiguous atmosphere attracted political exiles and writers, like James Joyce who eked out a living teaching English at the local Berlitz School. When
Joyce met Ettore Schmidt , the cynical owner of a Trieste factory, the local man did his best to hide that he was a disappointed novelist of genius who wrote under the name of Italo Svevo. Written and presented by Paul Bailey. Producer David Perry
