There is still a tendency, in this country, to see Middle Easterners in terms of harsh stereotypes, and the United States seems to have inherited this distorting mirror which has clouded our judgments in the past.
Sir Anthony Parsons , a senior Foreign Office Arabist and Mrs Thatcher 's personal advisor on foreign affairs until he retired in 1983, looks back over 30 years of involvement with the Arab world, and reflects that our troubled relationships with the Arabs might be improved if our 'distorting mirror' of love and hatred were tempered by a little judicious indifference.
