In his book The Social Function of Science, published in 1939, J. D. Bernal set out to demonstrate how science could cure all the world's ills.
Surprisingly, Bernal's criteria for assessing the worth of scientific activity still persist, even though they were drawn largely from Marxism. Dr David Williams of Loughborough University argues that Bernal's ideas should now be discarded, and that the way research is financed and directed should be changed radically.
