Shakespeare based his character Falstaff, was hanged as a traitor in 1417. Later Shakespeare's rivals, the Admiral's Men, commissioned a play that was to be 'a true and honourable history of Sir John Oldcastle ' as a counterblast to Shakespeare's treatment.
