Wordsworth was not an admirer of Crabbe's solid realism but many of the best English novelists were. John Lucas , Professor of English at Loughborough University, has been looking at Crabbe's contribution to the English novel and suggests that the poet's comparative obscurity today is the result of his merits and not of his failings.
