In 1931. Auguste Piccard ascended ten miles into the troposphere above
Augsburg in the enclosed gondola of a balloon. In 1960. his son Jacques descended ten miles into the Challenger Deep off Guam in a bathyscaphe. Between these points in time and space, man is observed groping in luminous darkness.
' Can't you see that this room. though closed, is endless? The labyrinth it pictures is your consciousness.'
