The title of this novelle is derived from a chemical theory of attractions which intrigued Cocthe as a scientist. It combines passionate love story with caustic observation of the idle classes in late 18th-century Germany.
Published in 1809, the Novelle shows Goethe's mastery of this essentially German genre.
