On the occasion of his 85th birthday the distinguished composer and scholar talked in his Oxford home to ROBERT LAYTON about his musical upbringing in Vienna at the turn of the century, and about Mahler, Strauss and Hofmannsthal with whom he collaborated. He discussed his own creative development and offered some reflections about the future of opera and the symphony.
