What is the function of intellect? Traditionally the biologist's answer has been that we needed creative intellect to solve the problems of the environment.
Dr Nick Humphrey of Cambridge University argues that we did not develop intellect to solve the Robinson Crusoe problem of subsistence - instead, intellect arose because of the Man Friday 'problem'. We are intelligent because we need to solve the problems of social living.
