The friendship between Elgar and A. J. Jaeger , ' Nimrod ' of the Enigma Variations, lasted 12 years. When it began Elgar was 40 and little known. When It ended, with Jaeger's death In 1909, Elgar was ' Sir Edward,' and world-famous. He had written among other things, the Variations, The Dream of Gerontius and the First Symphony, all of which owed much to Jaeger's sympathy and understanding. Written by PERCY YOUNG
