During a recent visit to Britain, Count Basie talked to Charles Fox, who introduces excerpts from their conversation, together with records illustrating some high spots of Basie's long career as a pianist and band-leader.

One of Basie's early mentors was Fats Waller - 'He was my guy, he was quite a man, and then came a lad called Tatum.' The Basie bands have included some of the great jazz instrumentalists such as Lester Young, Harry Edison, Clark Terry, Dickie Wells, Jo Jones, Freddie Green, and Buck Clayton - 'We didn't know Buck could write arrangements until he'd been in the band almost a year.'
