Introduced by John Maddox

Man has used the pollination process to produce new plant hybrids for centuries. But what is the precise mechanism involved? If more was known, could we breed totally different sorts of plants? Prof John Heslop Harrison, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, talks about recent advances in this field of research. Prof Ralph Riley, Director of the Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge, talks about the significance of pollen research for the plant breeder.
