The Origins of Capital and the Descent of Power
A Circus Piece for Two Sound Sources
Written by PHILIP OXMAN
An experiment in creating an intricate structure of poetic imagery in words and sound, rather than telling a dramatic story in the conventional way. The basic image is that of a family. Neb, Mugg and their son Laffy, on display in a circus, which, as they are short of money and have to butcher their own animals in order to live. is also a butcher's shop. Three clowns sardonically comment on the action but the one who thinks and suffers is a black man, Gideon, the assistant ringmaster, who stands for all oppressed minorities. The main image thus links the relationship of sex and power in the family and in society.
