ANTHONY QUINTON and GEORGE STEINER discuss the influence of Ludwig Wittgenstein 's Austrian background upon the development of his philosophy and personality. Their conversation is prompted by two books: William Warren Bart leys fotthcoming Wittgenstein, which concentrates on the so-called ' lost years ' when he worked as an elementary schoolteacher in lower Austria in the 1920s, and Wittgenstein's Vienna by Allan Janik and Stephen Toulmin which seeks to locate him in the cultural context of Vienna during the last days of the Habsburg Empire. followed by an interlude
