The distinguished composer and scholar recently celebrated his 85th birthday. In this programme he talks in his Oxford home to ROBERT LAYTON -about his musical upbringing in Vienna at the turn of the century, and about Mahler, Strauss, and Hofmannsthal with whom he collaborated. He talks about his own creative development and offers some reflections about the, future of opera and the symphony.
