It is accepted scientifically that drugs can be used to alter behaviour. Some psychiatrists. and most hippies, would agree that drugs can also change ' personality.'
Dr Joyce suggests strong reasons for questioning this extension of the argument, largely because of doubt whether some effects are caused bv drugs at all, and also because of the extreme difficulty of exact treatment.
Dr Joyce is Honorary Visiting Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School.
