The phrase ' apt for the Viols and voices.' Introduced by Weelkes in 1600, is capable of several different interpretations. In this programme voices unaccompanied sing madrigals by Bateson, who was born in about 1570; viols alone play madrigals by Weelkes and Gibbons, with Purcell's madrigal-like Third Fantasia: and Gibbons's 'What is our life?' and ' Nay, let me weep ' will be heard as consort songs with choral sections - perhaps the original style of performance.
