ROBERT SIMPSON writes:
This symphony is the largest and greatest of Bruckner's completed works. The conductor Hermann Levi shocked Bruckner by rejecting it. The result was massive revision, and subsequent arguments have raged about whether or not certain passages should be included. Robert Haas , who edited the work, thought they should.
