In a melancholy townland of modest farms, set amid the wind and the wet of some of the worst land in the west of Ireland, young Maureen McDowd cycles off to meet her lover. And so begins the horror of the tragedy that, on a chilled May morning, awaits the people of Drimaghleen...

Fifty years ago tonight America trembled. Martians had landed in New Jersey. Over a million people listening to Orson Welles's radio dramatisation of H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds didn't realise it was a play. Within minutes they were praying, crying and fleeing the poisonous gas and Martian death-rays.

Johnny Apple talks to some of those who were behind the most bizarre event in the history of broadcasting, and others who have good reason never to forget that night.
