Tim Schadla-Hall , Stanley Ellis and John Grundy take a radio walkabout, and search for what makes the buildings, speech and daily life unique in the Cumbrian coastal town of Whitehaven. They explore Britain's earliest example of post-medieval town planning; the site of the last foreign invasion of English soil; and discover that the provision of energy has always brought prosperity, and possible danger, to the town.

Using the 1933 Methodist Hymn Book John Gant has compiled a traveller's guide to the Pearly Gates and Beyond.
'When I was a boy it was still not unreasonable to speculate about there being "A friend for little children above the bright, blue sky", the same who wanted me for a sunbeam: they needed a friend up there before penicillin. The latest edition of the MHB I've not seen. It's said to be in harmony with antibiotics, moon shots, black holes and weathermen, so it must have been severely mauled, like the James 1 Bible and the Tridentine Mass.'

Beatles biographer
Hunter Davies got back from the USSR with a handful of records and tapes, and news of a rapidly changing Soviet rock scene.
The Beatles, once regarded by the Soviet authorities as a symbol of social sickness in the West, received the ultimate seal of approval earlier this year, when Mikhail Gorbachev confessed that he and his wife were both firm fans.
With help from some of the big noises in Russian rock,
Hunter Davies gives his musical holiday snaps an airing.
