Madame Bovary by GUSTAVE FLAUBERT abridged in 15 episodes by KEITH DARVILL
Read by Ian Holm (1)
A young country doctor's wife seeks escape from the boredom of her existence in love affairs and romantic yearnings, but is doomed by the nature of her society to disillusionment. When the novel was first published in 1856, Flaubert was put on trial for offending public morality. He was acquitted and the book became a succès de scandale.
More than a century later, it is recognised for the classic it is and as the first novel to establish the realistic tradition. Producer MAURICE LEITCH (R)
