The formal Dutch garden was described by the philosopher David Hume in 1748 as a 'silly collection of shells and clipped evergreens'. But despite this view, the British have come to accept this garden as part of their own heritage. Yet ask to see a formal 'Dutch' garden in Holland and you'll be shown an 'English" garden.
