Hugh O'Shaughnessy presents eight programmes on the politically violent and internationally sensitive countries of Central America. 1: Belize
The tiny former British colony is a haven of peace in this troubled region, but its continuing stability is threatened: an influx of Spanish-speaking refugees is changing its cultural balance: a boom in marijuana production is posing political problems; and the menacing shadow of its militaristic neighbour, Guatemala, looms. Peter Maxwell Davies at Large....
The composer, Peter Maxwell Davies, spent part of 1984 writing his Third Symphony which is given its world premiere by the BBC
Philharmonic Orchestra on Tuesday. But this was just one part of a hectic schedule of concerts, rehearsals, lectures and appearances at music festivals - including the St Magnus Festival which he started for his neighbours in Orkney where he lives in a remote croft. Tonight's programme accompanies him at some of these events - and follows him home.
