9: Sicily -a Roman Shipwreck
Capo di Plemmirio is a jagged, inaccessible cliff-face south of Syracuse. In early autumn it is buffeted by strong sirocco winds from Africa, making the approach to Syracuse harbour extremely hazardous. It was 1.800 years ago that a Roman galley foundered and sank there. Now archaeologists are attempting to retrieve its treasuresfromthesea bed 80 feet below.
