Glimpses of a whirlwind life, compiled by Andrew Thomas and Michael Tudor Barnes Nicholas Courtney
Stella Forge. Guy Gregory Kate Harper. Marvin Kane and Kerry Shale
Little known today,
Gottschalk was in the 1850s the nearest thing to an international superstar. A musical prodigy, born in New Orleans of an English father and a Creole mother, he achieved early fame as a virtuoso pianist and conductor, and was one of the first composers to use Latin American and Creole folk themes. He was the darling of royalty and the ' heart-throb of the West '. He died in 1868, aged 40.
