Music and the Brain
Recent research suggesta that music might affect our sex hormones, relieve stress and play significant part in improving both health in old age and literacy skills in young children. Just how does music affect our bodies through our brains? How do we hear, and why are some sounds ' musical ' and others not? How is it we can distinguish the sound of one instrument from another, the music of one composer from another.... and can personal preferences be explained? Why do some people seem more musical than others?
Educationist Dr Audrey Wisbey and neuro-biologist Professor Noel Dilly will, with Sue MacGregor , be listening for your questions. Produced by the Woman's Hour unit

The letters of a boy soldier, 1915-16
Compiled by ROGER KITCHEN with David Timson as Albert French and Nicholas Courtney and Patience Tomlinson Narrator PAULINE LETTS Albert French enlisted in the British army in October 1915. He was only 16 and had lied about his age. Eight months later he was killed by German machine-gun fire on the Western Front. In 1975 when his sister Mabel died, several of his letters were found. They tell the story of his life as a soldier. ' Once I start going.' he wrote, ' that is after I've been made a lance-corporal, I shall rise like the early-morning dew.'
This programme is based on those letters and on the recorded memories of his brothers George and William French.
