The seventh Leeds International Piano
Competition takes place between 7 and 19 September this year. Its prestigious list of prizes - engagements and awards is greater than ever before and underlines the importance of competitions as the gateway to an international career for the aspiring young performer. But is this importance justified, or are there other routes to the top? Is artistry sacrificed to competition success - and what about the many who don t succeed?
Natalie Wheen visits Leeds and asks organisers and competitors, jury members and past winners, agents and teachers what the competition means to them both musically and internationally.

Schizophrenia, paranoia, senile dementia and even less specific everyday anxieties and depressions can all be as distressing to the patient's family and friends as they are to the patient, not least because of lack of information about the nature and efficacy of available treatments.
Dr Anthony Clare , Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, and Dr Denis Friedman , Lecturer in psycho-sexual medicine at St Bartholomew's
Hospital, provide some of that information in response to listener's queries.
The programme is chaired by Sue MacGregor Produced by the Woman's Hour unit
