BOB MARLEY died on 11 May this year, aged 36. His funeral in Jamaica was more like that of a national leader than a pop star of international fame. Born of a West Indian mother and a British naval officer, he bridged the gap between black and white by more than his blood. He was mainly responsible for popularising reggae music outside his native
Jamaica and his influence helped make reggae part of the contemporary
British music scene. But his influence went beyond the world of music.
David Simmons assesses the man, his music, and his legacy.
