1: ... and thereby hangs a tale!
You may think folktales are simply stories for kids - all about wicked witches, friendly fairies and gullible giants. In fact the tales are reflections of things real to all of us -our hopes, our fears, our prejudices - going back to the dawn of history.
In this first of six programmes Toni Arthur takes a look at the different types of folktales, the areas of human experience on which they're based, and the tradition bearers themselves - the story-tellers.

No age ever celebrated its sensations with more verve and impish irreverence than the Victorians.
Roy Hudd takes a look at just a few of the frauds and swindles; sexuai misdemeanours; acts of bravery; freaks, curiosities and events that outraged and entertained our grandfathers and great-grandfathers and inspired the popular songwriters of the day: and together with Charles West sings some of the songs that, in turn, became brief sensations in themselves. with ELIZABETH PROUD and THE CHARLES YOUNG SINGERS at the pianoforte GORDON LANGFORD
