Passengers angrily blame day-long waits on action by air traffic controllers.Butinfact, some of the control systems in the world's busiest inters national air-space can no longer cope with summer demand. Outdated equipment, shortageofstaff, and poor international cooperation - these underlie a crisis which makes delays inevitable and poses a serious threat to air safety.

Sir John Gielgud talks to John Miller
6: Time for Everything
' I think the English are so good at practical jokes, or they used to be. My mother once told me that W. S. Gilbert took them on his yacht and tied all their pigtails to the chairs and then said, " Look at that shark " and they all jumped up from their chairs and were nearly decapitated, which I don't think is funny at all.'
