In March 1895. following almost 13 years of imprisonment by the Mahdist forces in the Sudan, Rudolph Slatin escaped and made his way to an English garrison at As-wan. Slatin, an Austrian officer, and ex-Governor of Darfur, survived to tell his tale by adopting new faiths and allegiances to suit the occasion. His credo of ' survival ' runs contrary to that of George Chesney , the young Victorian officer and gentleman to whom he tells his tale.
