A Coat of Many Colours by JIM CRACE with John Rowe Saeed Jaffrey and Trevor Martin
In March 1895. following almost 13 years of imprisonment by the Mahdist forces in the Sudan, Rudolph Slatin escaped and made his way to an English garrison at As-wan. Slatin, an Austrian officer, and ex-Governor of Darfur, survived to tell his tale by adopting new faiths and allegiances to suit the occasion. His credo of ' survival ' runs contrary to that of George Chesney , the young Victorian officer and gentleman to whom he tells his tale.
