Ian Richardson gives the second of six talks introducing the first season of Shakespeare's plays on BBC2.
Richard II
' Almost the most important thing about Richard is that he is King. When I played the part at Stratford I wanted to stress this, which meant examining the external characteristics of Royalty. I watched films of the Queen's Coronation and a newsreel of an investiture. What struck me most was the expert stage-management of those about the sovereign. She never needed to ask for anything. I tried to do the same. never looking to see if my commands were obeyed.'
Producer JUDITH BUMPUS
(Richard II is on BBC! tomorrow at 8.10 pm)
