The fighting in the summer of 1974 tore apart the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. With its two communities of Greeks and Turks, this one-time ' island of Aphrodite ', is divided not only politically and spiritually but physically as well - from the Bay of Morphou in the west, te Famagusta in the east.
In the fighting some 6,000 people were killed and many more thousands lost their homes and their livelihoods. But the recent consultations by the UN Secretary-General Dr Kurt Waldheim with Turkey, Cyprus and Greece have raised hopes for an eventual reunion of the now separated communities. At the same time Doreen Taylor has been to Cyprus to find out what it's like to live on an island that is almost two separate countries with a legacy of bitterness stretching back over 25 years.
