Ten programmes introduced by James Cameron
7: 'In the summer of 1951 we were beginning a mad and lovely and crazy and exciting experiment that was probably the only frivolous thing our solemn Labour Government ever did - the Festival of Britain' (JAMES Cameron) The Festival was a much needed boost. We were fighting with the UN in Korea and there was the ever-present fear of the atomic bomb. This was to become an issue in the General Election which the Labour Government called. The Conservatives won, but then the country came to a standstill as we mourned the death of George VI. Producers HELEN FRY and GWYNETH HENDERSON
