A series of seven programmes 1: The Birth of a Baby
Childbirth is still a traumatic and dramatic experience, but because of new drugs and techniques, fatalities are rare and there is no need for the mother to undergo any more pain than she chooses. Indeed childbirth can be painless.
But it is in the field of education for childbirth that the greatest advances have been made. Mothers-to-be and their husbands are taught what to expect, from their first visit to the gynaecologist until the actual moment of delivery. , Compiled and narrated by Tony Van den Bergh Producer ALAN BURGESS

The last woman in this country to be hanged ... If you were to ask 20 people in the street whether she should have hanged, some would probably say: ' Serves her right '; others, 'Nobody should be treated like that.'
Yet she was hanged for the murder of her lover under the law as it then existed in 1955. She offered little defence, she asked no mercy.
Edgar Lustgarten tells us what is now known, but there are still questions to be answered and after the programme he discusses her case with some of those involved. Written and compiled by TONY VAN DEN BERGH
