Verdi's Aida, the grandest of grand operas, had its first performance 100 years ago, on 24 December 1871 in Cairo.

'Well, it's done now, 'Aida' is finished, and after the first night I'll be able to breathe again. There'll be an end to the talk about it, except no doubt for a few final words, perhaps some new insult accusing me of Wagnerism, and then... Requiescat in pace!'
(Giuseppe Verdi)

Charles Osborne has written an account of the Cairo premiere, with extracts from letters and contemporary newspaper articles, and musical illustrations from the available recordings.
