The Simba Rebellion in 1964 trapped hundreds of white civilians in remote areas in north-eastern Congo. Many were maltreated, tortured, raped, imprisoned and slaughtered.
Helen Roseveare and a small party of her colleagues from the WCC Missionary Organisation were among those who suffered. After many dreadful experiences they were imprisoned and rescued from death only by the split-second intervention of a mercenary flying column.
The decision of Helen and her colleagues to return to Congo was made after much heart-searching. Today they are still there, helping to rebuild the country to which they have given their lives. Compiled and produced by ALAN BURGESS
Only Connect-on culture and communication by Richard Hoggart A series of six talks
3: In Another Country
Drawing upon his experience of living in America and in France (where he's currently working as Assistant Director-General of VNESCO), Professor Hoggart examines the problems of making contact within a foreign culture.
Living abroad, he argues, makes you think as you have not done before about the relations between the different parts of any society, about what each part assumes about those relations, and how that affects the way different parts speak to each other. †
