An occasional series that investigates possible miscarriages of justice.
Five years ago, in the military town of Bordon, Hampshire, an argument between two rival groups of men that began on a Saturday turned into a gang fight the next day. The fracas ended in murder. In the joint trial that followed, the charges ranged from actual bodily harm to grievous bodily harm to disturbing the peace.
Dave Smith confessed to clubbing the man to death with a baseball bat. Why then was another man, Smith's friend Sam Hill, found guilty of murder for the same killing?
And why is he still serving a life sentence today?
David Jessel investigates.
Telling forensic evidence and an extraordinary interview in the programme cast doubt on the verdict.
