The Cannes Film Festival, one of the most important events in the film industry calendar, ended last night. An unusual number of English-language films were chosen to compete for the main prize, the Palme D'Or.
Pale Rider, Clint Eastwood 's new Western, had its world premiere, and was in competition with Peter Bogdanovich 's Mask, starring Cher; Alan Parker 's Birdy, starring Nicolas Cage and Matthew Modine ; and the British entry, Nicolas Roeg 's Insignificance, starring Theresa Russell ,
Tony Curtis and Gary Busey. Peter Weir 's Witness, starring Harrison Ford , was shown at the opening night gala. Barry Norman previews these films and talks to the stars and directors, with coverage of the closing gala when the results of the main competition are announced.
