A four-part series about American power, and the challenge to it, in the Caribbean area.
The Dominican Republic has two presidents. One was voted into office, and occupies the presidential palace. The other - even more powerful - is a self-made billionaire who lives in New York. He is Charles G. Bluhdorn, founder of Gulf and Western, a gigantic American corporation, wielding enormous influence in this Caribbean island. His aim, as well as making a profit, is to create an 'anti-communist showcase'.
The United States of America has twice invaded the Dominican Republic to protect, above all, its own interests there. Bernard Falk reports on how, today, Gulf and Western does the job.
