The nine months of life before birth can present problems that only become apparent when the baby is born. Recently, doctors have been turning increasingly to ultrasound, a technique which started with a tool for detecting cracks in metal boilers and which can now draw pictures of exactly where the baby lies, and even how its heart is beating in the early weeks of pregnancy.
