A View of Europe in the Twentieth Century
A television history in 13 parts Written and narrated by John Terraine with personal comments by Peter Ustinov
13: A European Idea
The last programme in this series begins in 1968 - a year of violence in Paris and Prague -and brings this television history up to the present day.
What has now become of the European idea? The Continent is divided by the Iron Curtain - in the West the EEC comprises only nine nations, and even now Britain is questioning her membership.
As JOHN TERRAINE says: ' History is not a crystal ball;' and the effect of the oil crisis on Europe and the promises of riches from the North Sea will have to be left to a future historian.
But we can look back across the last 75 years of this century and trace the fortunes of the once-mighty continent which twice inflicted terrible wounds upon herself and now, although divided, is struggling to find a role in world affairs again.
