Kula - a Reason for Giving
In the South Seas, east of New Guinea, lies a group of islands whose inhabitants have evolved a system of intercommunication which is based on the exchanging of gifts from island to island. Called the Kula, it involves perilous sea journeys by canoe. This film follows a group of islanders as they set out on their annual odyssey in search of the Kula gifts. Narrator PAUL VAUGHAN

6: Are We Making a Good Peace? Peace does not come easily after a catastrophe like the First World War. In 1919 a World Peace Conference - the first in history - assembled in Paris to work out terms of peace - to re-draw the map of Europe - and to do something else as well.
A catastrophe on such a scale called for a remedy on the grand scale: this Conference would also have to shape a new and better world.
Unfortunately, as there had never been a World Peace Conference before, there were no precedents, no charts, no blueprints. There were only defeated nations and victorious nations, idealistic dreamers on the one hand, and hard bargainers on the other. Hence the question of an uneasy British delegate: ' Are we making a good Peace? Are we?' The Treaty of Versailles gave its own answer.
