After a petty crook is found shot on the New Orleans waterfront the Public Health Department is called in - and finds the man to have been infected with bubonic plague.
Richard Widmark stars as the doctor who turns detective in Elia Kazan's exciting and realistic story of how the authorities strive to avoid panic by keeping the news of the plague secret and at the same time rounding up everyone who might have been exposed to the infection.
