Joseph Conrad, sea captain turned novelist, wrote of "the bewitching breath of the Eastern waters ... the gift of endless dreams". In the China seas the British dreamt of endless power, endless wealth, and endless superiority. The heart of their dreams was Singapore, gateway to the East, fulcrum of Asian trade - and by the 1930s an impressive fortress.

A star-studded cast, some spectacular African locations and a strong story based on Romain Gary 's award-winning novel all combine in this powerful and colourful film directed by John Huston and produced by Darryl F. Zanuck.
Trevor Howard stars as a fanatical idealist bent on stopping the wholesale slaughter of Africa's elephants. Errol Flynn, in his last Hollywood film, gives one of the film's best performances and in a guest appearance Orson Welles adds a hilarious touch of comedy.

A mill girl at 14, at 20 a student at a theatre school in Bradford and a lecturer in educational drama at the age of 24, Dorothy Heathcote, housewife, is one of the most remarkable figures in English drama in recent years.
Today she works in Tyneside with a wide variety of young people, and at a hospital for the mentally subnormal. She knows that if she fails there are always 'three looms waiting' for her in the mill. She is unlikely to need them.
