A Test Match against Australia is always one of cricket's special occasions. In this first match of the series, Ian Chappell's young team will provide tough opposition as England start their bid to retain the Ashes won by Ray Illingworth's side in Sydney last year.

In the third and final programme in this series, Harold Williamson looks at two men who enjoy the work they are doing. Not highly qualified and not generously paid - they have jobs that give them fulfilment: variety, purpose and freedom to work on their own initiative. Both are detectives: one, an older self-styled 'thief-catcher' in Pudsey, Yorkshire; the other younger, concerned with reforming as well as catching offenders, in Doncaster. Real detectives with opinions about the law, the human race - and even Softly, Softly.
