In the formal and elegant surroundings of the Oxford Union, the members, their chairman Sue Richards and their guests Mrs Shirley Williams, MP, The Rt Hon Richard Crossman, MP, Professor C.B. Cox and Norman St John-Stevas, MP debate a motion that strikes at the heart of University education. It's a very British occasion with witty speeches, formal dress and the ironic pleasure that this highly educated and privileged group gained from discussing equality in a world where the University-educated are more equal than others.

Equally British is the fact that the Union was £30,000 in debt and in imminent danger of dissolution. The only suggestion from the floor was that the Americans should pay up.
