A mystery, Candida is an ideal wife: she runs the house, looks after the children and respects her husband the Reverend James Morell. No wonder the young poet Marchbanks also loves her. Morell will not tolerate the slavery of jealousy so makes Candida choose between them. It is her choice that is mysterious.
