In June 1916, the High Court of Justice in London considered the case of an Irishman accused of high treason - Sir Roger Casement. Casement found himself in the dock, because on Good Friday 1916, three days before the armed rising in Dublin, he had landed on the coast of Ireland from a German submarine. His intention was to help free the whole of Ireland from British rule.

Tonight's programme is taken verbatim from the official transcript and is introduced by Conor Cruise O'Brien
