A contest of cross-country horsemanship in which riders pick their fences as they go round the course.
West Region Outside Broadcast
Every fence a rider encounters has three levels, the highest carrying the greatest score. So a competitor can 'pick a fence'. A successful round over the highest level of each of the seventeen fences in the cross-country course gives the competitor a maximum score of 255 points. But this score, even if achieved, is difficult to retain, for immediately on completion of the cross-country section the competitor has to pass several hazards.
